What’s the difference between PIR and PUR?
Both PUR and PIR are a kind of rigid PU. However, they have different physical properties and chemical properties.
I . Difference between the raw material
Rigid PU consists of polyol and isocyanate. Polyol can be divided into polyether glycol and polyester polyol. Reaction between polyether glycol and will generate polyurethane foam(PUR); Reaction between polyester polyol and isocyanate will generate polyisocyanurate foam(PIR).
II. Properties of PIR
PIR is a kind of deep cold heat insulating material, which can be applied at the temperature from -196°C to 120°C. It has the advantages of thermo-stability. The index of black material of PIR is much higher than PUR, of which PIR is 110-120; PUR is 250. Only when the index of black material is over 200, it can be called PIR; if it is under 200, it can only called the mixture of PIR and PUR. Generally speaking, the white material of PUR is made of polyether; that of PIR is made of polyester. PIR has good thermo-stability, inflaming retarding, and high strength, but it has big brittleness and high cost. PIR has excellent linear expansion coefficient and intensity, and is extremely resistant to aging.
III. Properties of PUR
PUR has two types: foamed and non-foamed . foamed PUR is soft, hard and semi-hard PUR foamed plastic. Non-foamed PUR includes coatings, adhesives, synthetic leather, and elastic fibers.
IV. Production Technology
PIR technology is mainly applied to the heat preservation of building. It is reported that, in America, 95% of the PU insulation market adopts PIR system. If we say the PIR technology of one company is developed, we mainly refers to its experimental formula.
Fire resistance of PIR is better than PUR. So it mainly applied to the insulation fields. Requirement for production technology of PIR is strict than that of PUR. But the fluidity of PIR is not better than PUR and it has high requirement for the temperature.
